Vertrex’s Waste Ordnance Light Flashing Furnace (WOLFF) is a truck mounted transportable flashing furnace with an inbuilt afterburner that can be easily deployed for high-volume, repeatable results.
Traditionally, thermal decontamination ovens have been fixed installations and the cost of transporting and treating debris with trace quantities of explosive contamination has been prohibitive. This often resulted in debris remaining unprocessed and stored locally, usually buried.
This is why Vertex developed WOLFF, a front loaded, diesel fired Furnace 2.1 metres high by 2 .3 metres wide and 3.5 metres long.
Internal fittings are a fabric refractory to minimise weight and the floor is lined with a refractory board capable of withstanding 1.8 tonnes point loading. The furnace has been placed on a 40-foot steel flat top trailer and coupled complete with an afterburner and 6.5-metre discharge.
The WOLFF is designed with ‘sealed pack’ diesel burners and does not use conventional propane gas, resulting in reduced exposure to onerous levels of regulation surrounding its operation.
WOLFF design safety features include pressure release doors, which open if an explosion event is faced. The system has further safety features including auto shutdown, which activates at the end of a prescribed cycle or in the event of an explosion.
Vertrex has obtained an Environmental Licence from the NSW EPA to operate the WOLFF and EPA licences in other Australian states will be obtained as required.
